Pre-making BHA's Onshore
04 August 2005
An operator encountered a problem with pre-making BHAs onshore. A
damaged connection (split in the box) was noted by a directional
driller who was checking a spud assembly. It would seem that a heavy
item had been placed on top of the assembly, which had flexed and
led to the damage.

We used pre made up lower BHAS for some years successfully. They were transported for about 600 miles to port before shipping to rig. We never had a BHA problem as long as procedures were followed.

Premade BHA assemblies should be delivered with Torque certs and
sealed tape on connection.
