Pre-setting and/or dropping transponder arrays

At a recent Deepwater DWOP, we were discussing ways to optimise the activities upon rig arrival. 

One idea was to use a PSV (supply boat) to pre-set the array. Another was to simply drop it overboard.

I'd appreciate your comments on the above and, especially, hear from those who have tried this: how did you do it ..? what have you learnt ?
