Connection times and practices

Dear colleagues

We'd like to build on some earlier discussions that related to 'connection practices'.  In this case, we are looking to get a good idea, a benchmark, of slip-to-slip connection times. This is the time from setting the slips until the slips are pulled.

For:

• Drilling connection (connection whilst drilling)
• POOH stands
• RIH stands
• Singling in (involves picking up pipe)
• Singling out (involves laying out pipe)

We are being told that 3" minutes on a jack-up (non-automated because PRS not working; block-retract not being used because Drilling Co refuses to do so; with 5"" XT55 drillpipe) is good, but we disagree.

It would be good if as many members of the forum could share actual numbers and facts, on the connection times.

Things like:

• Times
• Rig type
• Details of rig set-up and level of automation (with or without block retract; with or without PRS)
• Drill-pipe type: single or double-shouldered
• Drill-pipe size
• Any other relevant information

We believe that this attention-to-detail (and micro-performance) is a good indicator of performance and attitudes on a rig.

Our industry lkes to use sporting analogies; so it is hard to imagine a Formula 1 team pit-stopping a car without a detailed plan, a benchmark (best in class) and a vision-of-perfection; likewise for a swimmer or athlete wanting to win gold.
