Drilling Shoetrack with Bi-center bit
23 August 2012 Hi folksAt 2 recent Deepwater Exploration Well DWOPs (Singapore & Stavanger), we got to talking about whether it's a good idea to drill shoetracks with bi-center bits.
The most recent conversation was about drilling 13-â…" 88.2 lb/ft(12.25" drift) casing with a 12¼" x 14¾" bit. The group were divided on whether it was better to drill out with a dedicated drill-out assembly first. Amongst reasons were high vibration.
As usual we were surrounded by opinions. It would be great to get some facts, relating to any problems that members have encountered in this or other geometric combination. Better still, would be some statistics like : of the xx shoetracks that we drilled with ffff inch x ggggg inch bi-center bit, inside vvvv inch xxx lb/ft we experienced xxx successes and xxx failures.
With kind regards
Dave
