Electronic drifting of Tubulars

We [BHPB Drilling, Australia] are looking into upgrading procedures for internally-drifting tubulars, wondering if it can be done with a laser or similar electronic means.
We are trying to avoid the need for personnel to handle heavy drifts.

That's a great concept. The first thoughts that pop into my head are :
1. Whatever system would still have to serve to prove assemblies will pass through (so the drift would have to "mimic" a stiff stabiliser/bit combination).
2. If it could be done with great accuracy it would be an excellent tool for wellsite teams to use for displacement calculations.
