Well Control in H2S Environments

26 September 2013

We are looking into drilling exploration well with possibility of encountering high concentrations of H2S in the reservoir section. I am putting together H2S management and control document at all stages of the drilling operations. I am having particular difficulty putting together reasonable Well Control procedures for this possible H2S environment. During drilling, H2S may not be detectable because of the fluid additives  and you may see only if you get a kick and circulate it out or concentrations can be misleading for the same reason until you take the kick.

How do you decide when to circulate it out or take other steps like bullheading? Can you please share any relevant experience and knowledge on this matter?

Thanks,

Elman.
