Plunger vs. Flapper Float Valves

03 October 2014 Hi Guys,

I just wanted a quick pros and cons with regards to the type of float valve to be selected, assuming that the team is adamant on running it in the first place. From what I have heard so far:

Pros
Plunger: More robust, can withstand more open/close cycles
Flapper: Allow balls to drop through, seals 'protected' from drilling fluid when in open position during circulation.

Cons
Plunger: Seals susceptible to wash out especially if partially plugged/closed
Flapper: Hinge susceptible to failure at high open/close cycles.

I would like to ask from the experience of the many here, which con is more likely? All comments and clarifications welcome.

Cheers!
Sam
