Union Connection into the Shooting Nipple

Dears, 

Would anyone explain why sometimes when using the shooting nipple for the wireline operations there's is a side outlet entry made with a Hammer Union Connection just below the box connection of the shooting nipple. 

P.S: this case is encountered in Lybia. You can see the water bottle in the picture showing where the Hammer Union Connection would be made and placed…..
