Experience of Drilling Out Cast Iron Bridge Plugs

27 September 2024

Hi Folks,

I'm looking at re-entering legacy wells (but less than 30years old) which have a cast iron bridge plug (e.g. Baker N-1, Owen BP PLG) set in the 9-5/8" casing, and 50m cement plug on top.

According to the literature, the Bridge Plugs (BP) are "drillable" as they are cast-iron.

But I'm keen to know anyone's actual experience if they drilled out as easily as the brochure says!

We want the entire 9-5/8" BP out of the well, and  can't just push to bottom, as we need access to the 7" liner below.

Planning a flat bottom mill or a mill tooth junk bit (3-1-6), steady parameters and probably pump some sweeps to lift the debris.

Open to suggestions and prior experience.

Many thanks

Ryan
