Removing 'old' Xmas tree from wellhead/THAF
12 May 2026Dear members
At a recent slot recovery performance workshop, the topic of removing the Xmas tree was discussed in some detail. This is a Wellhead Platform and the work will be undertaken by a jack-up.
For sure, the team will undertake ‘hot bolting’ to ensure no lost-time with bolt removal.
But the tree has been on for a while and there are concerns that it will not 'pull off easily.
There was discussion about installing lifting points on the Xmas tree. That didn't sound a good solution to ignorant ol' me;, tugging on a ‘free-standing’ wellhead.
In previous workshops, in Europe, thin jacks are used to prise the Xmas tree off.
When I intervened and suggested thin jacks, I was corrected and told that they were "an expensive solution" and that a cheaper solution was available; I may have misheard, but it sounded like hammering wedges in between the flange faces (?).
What response and insights do members have , along with solution(s)?
Thankyou in advance
