Drill pipe screens for XT-54 pipe

We're using 5-1/2" XT-54 drill pipe on our rigs in Kazakhstan, and over the last couple of years have had a two instances of large amounts of debris getting into - and completely plugging - the MWD/LWD tools, having bypassed all the suction and discharge screens on the mud pumps. We do not want to modify the pipe to accommodate a screen (also not recommended by Grant Prideco), so the only options are either to modify the saver sub or to install an extra sub with a screen between the drillpipe and the saver sub. This, however, is not so easy to break out and inspect on a regular basis. Does anyone have any experience of similar problems and possible solutions?
