Subsea Wellhead - seal assembly retrieval

12 December 2012

Hi All,

I was looking at the rate of failure in pulling the seal assembly from subsea wellheads.

Take this situation: the 9-5/8" casing needs to be cut and pulled and a sidetrack needs to be drilled and cased off afterwards.

Therefore a new seal should be installed in the same place and no damage should occur on the sealing area.

Does anyone have experienced a failure in this operation?

I was also wondering what others buy as insurances.

Does anyone get extensions to be able to isolate the damaged seal and then create a dummy seat for the new casing hanger?

When talking to one of our wellhead providers, it has been mentioned that some years back emergency casing hangers were secured by a Major.

Thanks for the feedback.
