Re-abandoning abandoned wells

23 December 2014

Folks

We have a requirement to re-abandon offshore wells (water depth approx. 190ft) drilled and abandoned from 1970 - 2013, in order to provide well integrity for future field development plans.  These wells have been located using magnetometers therefore the issue presented is re-entering the wells in order to re-abandon them.

Example wells

1970 well:

  • 30” and 13 3/8” cut 10ft below seabed.
  • The top of the shallow cement plug is 65ft below the 30” and 13 3/8” cut.

1990 well:

  • 30” was cut 10ft below seabed and the 13 3/8” cut 70ft below seabed.
  • The top of the shallow cement plug is 30ft below the 13 3/8” cut (OBM potentially below shallow plug).

Do you have experience of re-abandoning offshore/onshore wells which you can share or potential equipment that can be used for excavation of the 30” and 13â…œ” strings and suitable internal/external pressure containment methods to achieve safe entry into the well?
