Using Sharepoint on a drilling project

Greetings!

I've just joined a Company who are going to be doing a multi-well Onshore drilling project.

They want to use Sharepoint as the repository for all files generated right from the planning stages, all reports generated during drilling, through to the end of well report for each well.

I'm not that familiar with Sharepoint, but I do know that you cannot build a conventional ‘file tree’ like you normally would in Windows Explorer

Has anyone else used Sharepoint in this way, and if so, how did you set up a filing system for each well?

Also, as it uses metadata to store all information, how did you cope with nomenclature differences like 9 5/8", 95/8", 9.625" 9 ⅝" when it came to using the search function?

Thanks in advance for your help!
