Geothermal Drilling - Depth Measuring

Hello all,

We've recently set out a new drilling company in the UK, so finding our feet with a lot of things. 

A question that I want to ask is regarding borehole depth measuring.

When using a wire winch to test the depth of a borehole, how is this then measured/quantified? What are the other methods in which a hole depth can be measured?
