Black box diagnostics technology?

As applied in other industry's e.g. Mining, Aero-space, Military,
Aviation?

Does anyone have knowledge of where and how 3rd parties in the
oilfield are applying hi-tech 'black box' type monitoring
technologies/systems to critical path equipment components i.e. to
evaluate tool failure, mal-function, predict critical component life
expectancy etc?
