Drilling Ahead with auto-slips in place

Hi folks

At a recent DWOP, we discussed the opportunity of leaving the PS-30 autoslips in place whilst drilling.  This will save about an hour per trip.  This is a drillship, in a relatively benign weather environment.

We are aware of some of the potential downsides of this approach, including equipment failure.  We will be checking with the manufacturer for recommendations/advice, which we expect to include ensuring fitted with OEM parts.

To help with our (mini) Risk Assessment on this, please could our members advise of any instances of failures that you know of caused by drilling with auto-slips in place, along with:
  • Root Cause of any such failure, and recommendations
  • Additional precautions that you can think of
The more facts (as opposed to opinions) the better.

Many thanks

Dave
